Abstract

The poroelasticity theory has been used for elucidating the bone fluid flow in the cortical bone. However, not only the bone fluid flow is a primary mechanical stimulus to bone adaptation but also electrokinetic effect and piezoelectric effect. Therapeutic ultrasound is an emerging area in mechanobiology because the ultrasound is safe and it is believed to stimulate bone adaptation or bone mechanobiology.

In this paper, we derive the poroelastic equation including the electrokinetic effect and numerically show the relationship between the poroelastic wave and the electrokinetic effect for cancellous bone. We analytically obtain the poroelastic wave in terms of the electrokinetic effect. It is believed that the derived relationship between the poroelastic wave and the electrokinetic effect is useful for further experiments and we can suggest what kind of ultrasound is the best for the therapeutic ultrasound stimulating for bone adaptation or mechanobiology.
